The first time I heard Tyler Childers sing Oneida, was also my favorite concert of his I have ever seen. My friend and I had seen that he was going to be playing a free show at Louisa, Kentucky at their annual “Septemberfest” festival. It was in the middle of the street, around a Dollar General parking lot to be exact, where thousands of eager concert goers gathered to see his show. About halfway through the day came one of the worst rainstorms I have ever been stuck in and it even ruined some equipment, this lead to people questioning if he was even going to be able to perform or not but luckily everything got fixed and he put on an amazing performance. I was still a relatively new fan at this point, so when he started signing the song I only knew a few words but i soon became mesmerized by the lyrics and the beautiful sound that accompanied it. He has sang it at concerts since and has also sang it for “Red Barn Radio” but up until July 2nd, he has never officially released it on any platform or album. Fans were thrilled when he announced that he would be releasing it on July 2nd and that it will be a part of the new album “Snipe Hunter” which is being released at the end of this month. He released the song and music video and it felt like it was pulled straight from an Appalachian dream. It was filmed in front of an old house with all of the band members and Tyler as the main focus. The song is written about a man who is romantically drawn to an older woman and the struggles he faces due to the age gap. Lyrics like “I’m willing, if you have the time, to buy us some wine” is a testament to how much he wants the relationship to work but the age difference has proven it to be difficult. His intentional lyrics, and rustic raw voice, gives depth to every lyric and every emotion he is trying to convey to the listeners. This is the second single he has released leading up to the upcoming album. He also released the 13 song track list on July 2nd with some new and old songs mixed in. It is very interesting and important to note that this is the first album from Tyler Childers that will be produced by the world renowned record producer Rick Rubin, who has worked with everyone from The Chicks to Johnny Cash and every genre in between. This is a very interesting change in the career of Tyler Childers as his earlier work was produced by Sturgill Simpson, leading fans to be hopeful and waiting in anticipation to see how Rick Rubins influences the music of Tyler Childers.
