New York and the Bronx has been the kickstarter and home to many celebrities, creatives, and artists alike; one that has been making a significant impact as of late is the world renowned, top charting, and grammy nominated artist; Ice Spice. Digging from her roots really pushed for her creation of music and to empower not only herself, but other women as well that not only can be played in the clubs to her multiple theatrical and commercial appearances with her own song inclusions. She began to actively push for her spot within the industry in 2022 with her eruption/release of her piece named “Munich (Feelin’ U)” which became a staple and career breakthrough for her earning her a gold plaque and amassing streams alike through many streaming services. After her new found success, she remained steadfast with releasing more memorable music like “In Ma Hood” and her collaboration with Lil Tjay “Gangsta Boo”. During this time she also signed with Capitol Records to push her right into the mix with more mainstream artists, cementing her to becoming the force that she has today for women in pop/rap categories. As stated previously, her notoriety and tenacity pushed her to breakout artist and the second-most searched artist of 2023 known for her “cool, confident, and raw signature sound” as Salam states in The New York Times (Salam). As she continued down this everlasting climb into creating, she also achieved her own dreams of working alongside her idols like Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift on their respective tracks of “Princess Diana” and Swift’s “Karma” which plotted her into the numbers 2nd and 3rd spots on the Billboard Top 100 Charts.
Turning towards more recent news, Ice Spice has also been featured on the cover of NYLON and began collaboration with another Grammy nominated artist, Latto for their first partnership for her new single “Gyatt”. On the other hand with not only aiding other artists’ in their success Ice Spice who has now been crowned her newly-minted nickname of the “Princess of New York” follows up her own past with the new release of her music video for her song, “Baddie Baddie”. In creating this new piece, she had begun collaborating with one of her breakout/founding group RiotUSA and New York bred directors George and Frederick Buford better known as The Evil Twins. This new single is her first solo release since her highly regarded, “Y2K: I’m Just A Girl” album that gave us memorable hits from her such as, “Think U The Shit” and “Gimme A Light”. Throughout the creation of this previous album and to her upcoming releases/appearances, she shows how her unorthodox yet unmistakable lyrics have had such an impact on how her voice is shaping this current period in her career.
In finalizing Ice Spice’s many creative endeavors, her musical talents are not the only places that truly encapsulate her and her impact, as mentioned briefly beforehand she has been involved in not just a microphone but, also as in front of many cameras and the face of many marketing/advertising campaigns. Delving more into these topics specifically, Ice Spice has found success with merging her strategic voice and likeness/face into pieces like Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS campaigns, to the very-successful Barbie movie/soundtrack, Ben Affleck’s DUNKIN commercial to her most recent appearance in Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest” with Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky. In light of these achievements most recently and upcoming she is set to star in “The Spongebob Movie: Search for Squarepants” that will also include an original song curated by her. In totality, in attempting to condense Ice Spice’s rapid success/growth which is a difficult task albeit, she is not only captivating movie screens or soundtracks but also paving her way and creating a path of empowerment for women in the pop/rap industry, standing up for herself, and showing that your stylistic uniqueness is what can make you one of the most memorable and impactful stars of this generation.
