The Empire Arts Center’s 50th-anniversary production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show wasn’t just another performance—it was a glittering, heartfelt celebration of community, courage, and creativity. Every year, stepping into that historic downtown Grand Forks theatre feels like coming home, but this anniversary had an extra spark. The lobby buzzed with excitement as sequined fans gathered in fishnets and boas, laughter filling the air. For me, it’s always a privilege to come in and capture this show through my lens—each photo a glimpse of the joy, chaos, and unity that Rocky Horror inspires time and time again.

Presented by Mental Worx Theatre Company, this year’s production found fresh energy under the newly direction of Zachary Hilliard, whose thoughtful vision and playful spirit brought the cult classic to dazzling life. The live cast was fearless and magnetic, breathing new fire into the film’s timeless scenes. Every beat of “The Time Warp” carried the unmistakable pulse of live theatre at its most exhilarating.

Adding to the magic was special guest and Grand Forks’ long experienced Rocky Horror producer Kelly Clow, who joined the Halloween and November 1st performances to the absolute delight of the audience. His presence infused the nights with even more humor, heart, and spontaneity—reminding everyone why this show has endured for 20+ years, making him a staple in Grand Forks’ history in the theatrical arts. Together, Zach and Kelly created a production that honoured the rebellious soul of Rocky Horror while keeping it vibrant and local, stitched lovingly into the cultural fabric of Grand Forks.

What continues to move me about Rocky Horror, and especially about this run, is the warmth and inclusivity that fills the Empire. Whether you’re a first-time “virgin” or a veteran of many nights, the crowd becomes one: shouting, laughing, and celebrating the freedom to be unapologetically yourself. Behind the makeup and music is something profoundly human — a reminder that belonging can be found in the most unconventional places.

As the final applause echoed through the theatre, I felt immense gratitude—not just for the artistry on stage, but for the shared joy in the room. So, again, congratulations to Mr. Zachary Hilliard, Mr. Kelly Clow, and the entire cast and crew on a triumphant, love-filled production. The Empire Arts Center once again proved that The Rocky Horror Picture Show isn’t merely a tradition—it’s a living, breathing expression of community, creativity, and connection.
