Concerts have always held a special place in society, it’s a way for everyone to get together and connect over a common interest which is extremely important for the audience members, as well as the artists performing. It’s a way to take a much needed break from the stresses of every day life and also gives artists the opportunity to show off their talents. Living in a small town the options for big concerts and festivals can sometimes be limited, but for 45 years at the small college campus of Davis and Elkins a festival called Deja Vu is held, bringing in all kinds of genres of music and music lovers from college students to members of the community. This year the lineup was Stalnaker Hill, a bluegrass band, singer songwriter Cassidy Dickens, and the headliner was the rock band Smash Mouth known for their hit songs “All Star” and “Believer” from the movie Shrek. Stalnaker Hill started the night and the talent they had on the acoustic guitars was very impressive as they played original bluegrass songs as well as mixed it up with some reimagined pop songs that had the audience laughing and amused. They had great humor during their set, making jokes that they were going to dress as Shrek and Donkey, characters from the above mentioned film, but they settled for western ware. Next up was Cassidy Dickens, a singer songwriter whose style can be compared to Stevie Nicks. She sang a mixture of original songs as well as covers from other artists and well known songs. Her band consisted of members local to the Elkins area, which made the audience erupt in applause as they were announced. It was wonderful to see the support the local town has for the local musicians and their fellow community members. Last up was the long awaited headliner Smash Mouth. As soon as they came on stage I was transported back to the early 2000s music I used to listen to as a teen and it brought back so many nostalgic memories for so many in the audience, ages ranging from children to older adults, and they all knew every word and danced to every song at one point even forming a mosh pit at the request of the lead singer. The highlight of the night was when they dedicated a song to the tour crew and bus drivers, stating they have a very tough job making sure everyone gets to where they’re supposed to be. Being a part of a tour crew, wherever it be a bus driver, a roadie in charge of getting everything on the stage and set up, or the audio visual technicians, can be a very tiring job and it was very nice to see a band take the time to appreciate them and give them the recognition they deserve. The band ended the electric and energy filled show with their hit song “All Star” which they joked they were unsure if they know, with the help of all the audience members. Along with the concert there were local restaurants selling food and Cassidy Dickens had a merchandise table with her debut CDs as well as a Photo Booth and light up jewelry for the crowd to enjoy. The festival is a way to show appreciation for the students and staff, as well as an event for community members to enjoy
