On May 28, 2026– Australian band, NIGHTDIVE released a reflective single “Placate” ft St.Sinner that uses the word placate in a metaphorical way that represents suppressing emotions and comprising your own needs to keep those around you satisfied. The mental exhaustion you hear during the harsher vocals gives the listener a vivid imagery of someone who is burnt out and attempting to keep the peace within themselves. The cleans in the single carries a heavy weight of delicacy with a hint of vulnerability almost like that’s the version of the person that knows they deserve to move forward in life even after making decisions that were not okay. The arrangement of the instrumentation does not overpower both vocalist’s, but enhances the core meaning and intensifies the lyricism.
Interviewer: For new fans that just discovered Nightdive; can you give some history of the band and the soundscape of your music?
Sam: “We come from somewhat different backgrounds. I played in a lot of indie rock bands after high school, and was producing a lot of EDM stuff for local artists in Sydney. I also grew up on a lot of heavier stuff. the typical 00s metalcore like avenged sevenfold. But that eventually turned into an obsession with progressive death metal bands like Opeth. Everyone in the band has their own version of this. We’re pretty all over the shop.“
Jaz: “Mitch and I are actually childhood best mates and we nerded out on heaps of 90/00s emo, alt and metal growing up. Underoath, Alexisonfire, Deftones, At The Drive In, Radiohead etc. We definitely draw upon those influences now to create a “mood”. We started writing tunes remotely as a group mid 2025 and the response lit a fire under us to push harder.”
Mitch: “To reiterate what the other boys have said, we all come from similar influences, just different iterations of them. That’s what shapes the balance of “heavy vs hook” in our sound, and I feel like we’ve found a really nice middle ground with that currently.
Personally, when it comes to playing and writing in a band setting, I love leaning into the textural and tonal elements of songs, both from a synth and guitar/bass perspective. I’m drawn to music that rewards the listener both sonically and emotionally with every listen. I think that’s something that naturally comes through in our music too. There are so many layers woven throughout it, and each time you come back to a song, there’s always something new to take away from it.”
Interviewer: What inspired the story behind “Placate”?
Sam: “My relationship with alcohol has been a pretty pivotal thing for me. It was definitely a tool I used to navigate some social anxiety I had in life. something i think a lot of young men deal with. Placate is about coming to terms with that, seeing your future in front of you and wanting to start the journey towards a life where you treat yourself a little better, while also reflecting on the fact that maybe you’ve let a few things slide in your life.”
Interviewer: Were there any musical influences that shaped the sound of this track?
Sam: “I actually have no idea with this one. I know I wanted to channel a little bit of Four Year Strong’s latest album in the bridge.”
Mitch: “This was an odd one. From memory, Sam had the bones of it and we just built it naturally, following our gut and trusting the process. Sonically, the guitars for me were definitely very Every Time I Die x Thrice inspired. The real focus on this track though was the bass. I feel like it absolutely slams and really grounds a lot of the sections perfectly, (thanks Foz haha)”
Interviewer: What do you hope listeners take away from “Placate”?
Sam: “I hope some of the message gets through, but I also just hope it’s a catchy song that makes them feel something.“
Jaz: “As Sam was saying, there is a message of self reflection here that probably most people could identify with but I’m always a fan of the Lynchian notion that part of the joy of art is interpreting your own meaning. That meaning changes from person to person depending on things like mood, where you’re at in life etc. Again, like Sammy said, I’m just stoked if someone feels anything when they listen to our music.“
Mitch: “I want this track to unfold for the listener. It’s the balance of catchiness and heaviness that grabs you initially, but the real reward is in the lyrics and the repeat listens. Every time you come back to it, there’s something else to connect with or pick up on. I just hope people end up loving it as much as we loved making it.“
Interviewer: What does each member bring to the creative process?
Sam: “Each member is incredible in their respective field, so often we just leave things up to the individual to figure out. I never know what the drums will actually be until Jack has finished tracking them in the studio. I also don’t bother with much of the guitar work because I know Mitch and Jaz will be far more meticulous than me. Chris really helps bring a world to the songs, some atmosphere and vibe, he does alot of the electronic soundscape work. I’ll usually come up with the initial idea – melody and some chords. When the boys tell me it’s a winner, we develop it. Other songs have started with a guitar part or arrangement from someone in the band, and i’ll write lyrics to that. We’re pretty open to whatever works in the moment.“
Mitch: “There’s a lot of crossover creatively within the band. We’re all pretty capable on the production side, but naturally each of us approaches things from a slightly different angle. We usually bounce moods and ideas off one another until we land in the right place.
Once we find that world, everything tends to come together really quickly because everyone feeds into the atmosphere that’s being created. It definitely helps that Sammy always writes a catchy chorus too, otherwise it’d probably just turn into a full guitar and synth fest pretty quick (haha.)”
Interviewer: For the official music video for “Placate” (if applicable), what was the concept the band tried to portray? Any metaphorical meaning?
Sam: “Not really for this one. Just wanted to showcase what a nightdive show might be like – the energy and vibe.“
Interviewer: Are there any themes you’re exploring in upcoming music?
Chris: “We have a few more songs coming out soon that explore thematic tie-ins with love, death, relationships and the effect they have on our lives, both positive and negative.”
Interviewer: What can fans expect next from Nightdive?
Chris: “Expect the unexpected, cliche i know but our next single will be our most unique in the nightdive catalog, we hope the fans will enjoy it as much as we do.”
Mitch: “The rest of the Ep has some curveballs for sure, we’re very into pushing the envelope, so be on the look out for the weird shit! Post that I think we’ve toyed with the idea of writing some bigboy slammers but you never know, could be modular synths and reverb if the moods right, I’d never give out the real secrets of nightdive that easy.“
