Interview with Connecticut’s metalcore band, Motherwell!

Motherwell is a metalcore band that thrives on aggression, unfiltered emotions, and being able to bring chaos with them with every step on their journey through this destructive industry. Emotional disconnection, vulnerability, and raw intensity is what Motherwell captures through their music that will leave a permanent impact on the listener.

Motherwell released their new single “Divinity” that encapsulates empowerment and being able to find your own strength through the darkness and finding clarity of what life truly is. There such emotional turbulence in the single that represents the anguish that causes a collapse within the narrator, but also an awakening. The punishing forces that coincides within the vocal performance showcases that everyone has a breaking point which is why this single erupts into controlled aggression

Interviewer: How did the band first come together?

Julian Ingram: “The original drummer (Caleb) and I would write songs all the time since we were kids and had a pretty bad metalcore band in 2007 / 2008 called Root of Redemption which did not last long but we always bonded over music. Over the years we would write and record songs at my house and eventually we decided that we should try putting a new band together with some material we recorded and then we started the band in 2022.

Interviewer: Where did the band name come from?

Julian Ingram: “In 2005 Caleb and I went on a trip with our church to Motherwell, Scotland. It was the first time we left the country and it’s a core memory in our lives so when we were deciding on a band name that was one that we both loved and agreed on.

Interviewer: What themes naturally appear in your music?

Julian Ingram: “I write a lot about dealing with loss of loved ones and how to navigate through all the uncertainties of life.

I think everyone has a story to tell and I want them to know this band is full of people that are here to help anyone that’s struggling to find hope in life.”

Interviewer: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard you before?

Julian Ingram: “I always start off with ear bleeding lol. We are a mix of heavy riffs / breakdowns and our new bassist Josh Herzer is the singer for the band Lions Lions so we’ve taken advantage of his clean vocals and added that to our choruses. The typical metalcore formula.”

Interviewer: What bands or artists shaped your music the most?

Julian Ingram: “For me personally it’s Life In Your Way, As Cities Burn and Underoath are a huge lyrical inspiration as for the sound of the music. It’s a mix of modern metalcore and the early 2010 era.”

Interviewer: What makes your band different from others in your scene?

Julian Ingram: “I don’t know how different we are musically, we don’t really think about it that much. We just want to have fun and share what we love and make friends along the way. “

Interviewer: What kind of energy do you try to bring onstage?

Julian Ingram: “We are all in our mid to late 30’s so I’d say we are like raccoons with rabies… and arthritis.”

Interviewer: What keeps you motivated creatively?

Julian Ingram: “I am very lucky to say that all the guys in the band are very creative writers. Daryl is one of our guitarists and the brains behind mixing / mastering our songs and our other guitarist James is doing more writing lately so it really helps spread out the workload so I never really feel burnt out and our bassist Josh is one of the funnest guys to work on vocal melodies with. When it comes to lyrics they usually come to me when I’m going on hikes in the woods / mountains or taking my dog on long walks. Big outdoor guy here.

Interviewer: What’s one thing you’ve learned from being in a band?

Julian Ingram: “Be honest about any concerns you have over how the band functions to avoid any resentment. The best way to fix a problem is to address it immediately and with humility.”

Interviewer: What’s next for the band?

Julian Ingram: “We are currently working on a lot of new songs that may lead into something bigger in the future!

Interviewer: What do you want new listeners to remember after hearing your music?

Julian Ingram: “That we made art that is worth revisiting and that the words are encouraging.”
