There is something really special about watching a band grow.
Not just watching the numbers get bigger or the rooms get fuller, but watching the people behind the music change, challenge themselves, take risks, and become more confident in who they are as artists.
That is what makes Where The Light Begins To Fade feel so meaningful for If Not For Me.
I’ve had the opportunity to watch this band continue to grow, and knowing the people behind the music makes this album hit a little differently. You can hear the heart, frustration, exhaustion, vulnerability, and determination that went into creating it.
Out now through Thriller Records, Where The Light Begins To Fade is easily one of the band’s most ambitious releases yet. It feels bigger, more diverse, and more willing to step outside of what listeners may already expect from If Not For Me while still holding onto the things that make them who they are.
And at the center of it all is vocalist Patrick Glover, who approached this record differently than anything the band had created before.
This album wasn’t written entirely from a place of personal sadness, anger, guilt, or grief. Instead, Patrick had to find new ways to tell stories, explore emotions, and create songs that felt authentic without always pulling directly from his own experiences.
That process wasn’t easy.
The band was writing and recording while constantly touring. They brought more people into the songwriting process, experimented with ideas, created demos, and ultimately had to walk away from songs that didn’t make the final record.
For anyone who creates music, art, photography, or really anything they pour their heart into, letting go of something you’ve worked so hard on can be incredibly difficult.
Patrick openly admits that it was hard for him.
“This was the first time we had to leave so many demos that never made it to the finish line behind, something that’s really hard for me to do.”
And you can feel the weight of that process when you hear him talk about the album.
There were moments when creating this record became physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting. Sometimes he had to separate himself from his own feelings just to keep moving forward and focus on making the best music possible.
But sometimes the hardest seasons create something beautiful.
And I think that’s exactly what happened here.
Where The Light Begins To Fade takes listeners through betrayal, grief, heartbreak, trauma, jealousy, lust, horror, and so much more. There are songs that feel like a punch straight to the chest, songs that feel deeply personal, and songs that are simply fun to scream along to.
If you want the unapologetic, confrontational side of If Not For Me, “Love To Hate Me,” “Prey For Me,” and “Say It To My Face” have you covered.
If you’re looking for the songs that dig deeper and leave a little more of themselves behind, “Broken Throne,” “Close To Closure,” “Novocaine,” “Pretty Lies,” “Retrograde,” and “Save Me” carry some of the most personal moments on the record.
And then you have songs like “Lie Awake,” “Teeth,” and “Unholy,” which remind you that not everything has to be heavy emotionally to be heavy musically.
That’s one of my favorite things about this record.
It doesn’t feel like If Not For Me is trying to fit themselves into a specific box.
They’re just making the music they want to make.
And honestly, that’s where some of the best music comes from.
Patrick has talked about how proud he is of the lyricism, songwriting, and symbolism throughout this album, and I think that pride comes through. You can hear a band that learned a lot about itself through the process of making this record.
They had to compromise. They had to fight for the things that mattered. They had to let some things go. They had to try things they hadn’t tried before.
And somehow, all of that became Where The Light Begins To Fade.
Patrick says the experience brought the band some of the most versatile and diverse music they’ve ever created. He also believes they wrote some of the best songs they’ve ever written.
As someone who genuinely cares about this band and the people behind it, that makes me incredibly happy to see.
Because at the end of the day, music isn’t just about putting songs into the world.
It’s about the people who make them.
It’s about everything they carry into a room when they start writing. It’s about the things they don’t always say out loud. It’s about the late nights, the exhaustion, the second guessing, the moments of excitement when a song finally comes together, and the courage it takes to put something deeply personal in front of thousands of strangers.
That’s what makes Where The Light Begins To Fade feel different.
It’s not perfect because it tries to be.
It’s powerful because it’s honest.
And for a band that has already come so far, I’m excited to see where this next chapter takes them.
